History

The first written mention of Avry-sur-Matran dates back to the 13th century. At that time, it was known as Avri. Over the centuries, the village was owned by various noble families and the nearby Avry-devant-Pont was an important center for cloth-making. During the 20th century, the population of Avry-sur-Matran increased as a result of improved transportation links and the growth of small businesses.

Avry-sur-Matran is located in the Swiss plateau, between the cities of Fribourg and Bulle. The municipality has an area of 4.56 km² and is situated at an altitude of 737 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by fields and forests and is crossed by the Glâne river.
