The area of Bettingen has been inhabited since prehistoric times. In the Middle Ages, the village was part of the Herrschaft of Pfeffingen. In 1833, Bettingen became a municipality of the newly-formed canton of Basel-Country. In 1936, Bettingen was transferred to the canton of Basel-Stadt.

Bettingen is located at an altitude of 420 meters above sea level and covers an area of 2.68 square kilometers. The municipality borders the canton of Basel-Landschaft to the east and south. The Blauen mountain is the highest point in the municipality, reaching an altitude of 1,165 meters.
