Overview

Birmenstorf is a municipality in the district of Baden in the canton of Aargau in Switzerland. The municipality is situated in the Limmat Valley, about 10 kilometers northwest of the city of Baden. The area around Birmenstorf has been inhabited since prehistoric times and was a Roman settlement. Today, Birmenstorf is a residential community with a population of around 3,500 people.

History

The first traces of human settlement in the Birmenstorf area date back to the Neolithic period, around 5,000 years ago. The Romans built a settlement here, which was abandoned around the 4th century AD. The village of Birmenstorf was first mentioned in historical records in 1100 AD. Throughout the Middle Ages, the village was part of various feudal estates and jurisdictions. In the 19th century, Birmenstorf became a center of the Swiss linen industry. Today, the municipality is primarily a residential community.

Geography

Birmenstorf has an area of 6.13 square kilometers and is situated in the Limmat Valley, at an altitude of 404 meters above sea level. The municipality borders the towns of Baden, Ennetbaden, Untersiggenthal, Turgi and Gebenstorf. The river Limmat runs through the municipality and there are several ponds and small lakes in the area.

Birmenstorf has a population of around 3,500 people, with a relatively high percentage of foreign residents. As of 2020, around 28% of the population were non-Swiss nationals. The official language of the municipality is German.
