Overview

Confignon is a municipality in the canton of Geneva, Switzerland. It is located to the south-west of the city of Geneva and is part of its metropolitan area. The village has a population of around 4,000 people and is known for its picturesque old town and its location at the foot of the Jura mountains.

History

The first mention of Confignon dates back to the 13th century, when it was known as "Comminion". In the Middle Ages, the village was part of the feudal domain of the Bishop of Geneva. During the Protestant Reformation, the village became a stronghold of the Reformed faith and was the site of several important synods. In the 19th century, Confignon became a popular destination for summer tourists, attracted by its clean air and beautiful scenery.

Geography

Confignon is located at an altitude of 450 meters above sea level and covers an area of 3.53 square kilometers. It is situated on the left bank of the Rhone river and is bordered by the municipalities of Bernex, Lancy, Onex and Plan-les-Ouates. The village is surrounded by agricultural land, forests and vineyards and offers a beautiful view of the Jura mountains to the south.

As of December 2020, Confignon has a population of 4,139 people, of which 48.2% are male and 51.8% are female. The population is relatively young, with a median age of 36.3 years. The majority of the population (78.3%) are Swiss nationals, with the remaining 21.7% being foreign nationals. The most common languages spoken in the municipality are French (77.3%), Portuguese (4.2%) and English (3.4%).
