Overview

Creda is a municipality in the district of Bellinzona, in the canton of Ticino, Switzerland. It is located in the Riviera valley, about 18 kilometers north of Bellinzona. The municipality consists of several scattered settlements, including the village of Creda and the hamlets of Verdabbio and Monti di Creda.

History

Creda has a long history dating back to the Roman era. In the Middle Ages, the village was a fief of the bishop of Como. During the 14th century, the village was granted to the Visconti family, who later sold it to the Rusca family. In 1798, Creda became part of the Helvetic Republic and later, in 1803, part of the newly formed canton of Ticino.

Creda has an area of 15.5 square kilometers and is located in the Riviera valley in the northern part of Ticino. The municipality is situated at an altitude of 475 meters above sea level and includes several scattered settlements. The highest point in the municipality is Pizzo Bombögn, which stands at 1,762 meters above sea level.

Creda has a population of approximately 550 people. As of 2021, about 10% of the population are foreign nationals. The official language of the municipality is Italian.
