Overview

Estavannens-Dessus is a municipality in the district of Gruyère, in the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland. It is located in the Prealps between the Sarine and the Jogne rivers. The municipality consists of several hamlets and villages, including Estavannens, Enney and Crésuz.

History

The area of Estavannens-Dessus has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the presence of megalithic tombs and other archaeological finds. The village of Estavannens is first mentioned in historical records in 1259. Over the centuries, the area has been subject to various feudal lords and rulers, including the counts of Gruyères and the lords of Oron. In 1848, Estavannens-Dessus became part of the newly-formed canton of Fribourg.

Estavannens-Dessus has an area of 17.3 square kilometers and is located at an altitude of 791 meters above sea level. The municipality is situated in the foothills of the Prealps and is characterized by rolling hills and forests.
