Overview

Faido is a municipality in the district of Leventina, in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. The municipality is situated in the upper part of the Leventina Valley, on the left bank of the Ticino river. It consists of the village of Faido and several hamlets scattered on the surrounding hills.

History

The first written record of Faido dates back to the 13th century, when it was mentioned as Fado. The village was under the rule of the Dukes of Milan, the Swiss Confederation and later the canton of Ticino. During the 19th century, Faido was an important center of the Gotthard railway construction and the town developed rapidly during this period.
