Overview

Illnau is a municipality in the district of Pfäffikon in the canton of Zurich, Switzerland. It is located about 25 km northeast of Zurich and has a population of around 8,000 people. The municipality comprises the villages of Illnau, Effretikon and Lindau.

History

The earliest record of Illnau dates back to the 9th century, when it was known as "Illenouua". The village was part of the Habsburg territories until 1460, when it was sold to the city of Zurich. During the Reformation, the village became Protestant. In the 19th century, the railway line connecting Zurich and Winterthur was built and this led to the growth of the village. In 2014, Illnau merged with the neighboring municipality of Effretikon.

Geography

Illnau is situated on a plateau between the Greifensee and Pfäffikersee lakes. The village is surrounded by agricultural land and the forests of the Pfannenstiel range are located to the west of the village. The highest point in the municipality is the Buechberg, which is 696 meters above sea level.

Demographics

As of 2021, Illnau has a population of around 8,000 people. The majority of the population is Swiss, with a significant proportion of residents originating from Germany and Italy. The official language of the municipality is German.

Illnau has a temperate climate with warm summers and cold winters. The average temperature in July is around 18°C, while in January it is around 0°C. The municipality receives an average of 1,100 mm of rainfall per year.
