The first historical record of Liebistorf dates back to 1201 when it was mentioned as "Lutolvisdorf". Throughout its history, Liebistorf was part of the Bishopric of Lausanne and later the Canton of Bern. In 1848, it became part of the newly-formed Canton of Fribourg.

Liebistorf is located on the southern shore of Lake Neuchâtel, at an altitude of 430 meters above sea level. The municipality is situated in the foothills of the Jura Mountains and is surrounded by agricultural land, forests and vineyards.
