Littau is a municipality in the canton of Lucerne in Switzerland. It is located in the southeastern part of the canton and is a suburb of the city of Lucerne. The municipality covers an area of 13.11 km² and has a population of approximately 19,000 people.
History
The earliest evidence of human settlement in the Littau area dates back to the Neolithic era. The village itself was first mentioned in historical records in the 9th century as "Luttauva". Throughout the Middle Ages, Littau was part of the lands owned by the Monastery of St. Leodegar in Lucerne. In the 19th century, Littau developed into a center of the textile industry and later into a residential suburb of Lucerne.
Geography
Littau is situated in the valley of the Kleine Emme river, between the Pilatus and the Napf mountain ranges. The municipality includes several small villages and hamlets, including Bramberg, Grosshof and Reussbühl. The highest point in the municipality is the 1,128-meter-high Längenberg.
