Monticello is a small municipality located in the district of Bellinzona in the canton of Ticino, Switzerland. It is situated on the left bank of the Ticino river and covers an area of 1.36 square kilometers. The population of Monticello is around 400 people and the official language spoken is Italian.

History

The first known settlement in Monticello dates back to the Roman era, as evidenced by the discovery of a Roman villa in the area. In the Middle Ages, the village was under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Como. During the 16th century, the Swiss Confederacy gained control over the area and Monticello became a part of the bailiwick of Bellinzona. In 1803, Ticino became a canton of the Swiss Confederacy and Monticello became an independent municipality.

Monticello is situated at an altitude of 237 meters above sea level, on the left bank of the Ticino river. The municipality is surrounded by the municipalities of Bellinzona, Sementina and Giubiasco. The area around Monticello is characterized by rolling hills covered with vineyards and orchards.
