History

The first written record of Niederwichtrach dates back to the year 994, when it was mentioned as "Wichtracho inferiori" in a deed of gift from the Bishop of Lausanne to the Abbey of Cluny. The village was originally part of the estates of the Bishop of Lausanne, but in the 14th century, it came under the jurisdiction of the city of Bern. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the village experienced a period of economic growth due to its strategic location on the trade route between Bern and Thun.
