Overview

Balsthal is a municipality in the district of Thal in the canton of Solothurn in Switzerland. It is situated at the confluence of the river Balsthaler Aare and the river Dünnern. The town is located at the foot of the Weissenstein mountain and is surrounded by forests, hills and meadows. Balsthal has a population of approximately 6,500 people and covers an area of 16.55 square kilometers.

History

The first written record of Balsthal dates back to the year 1167. In the Middle Ages, the town was an important trading center and had a castle that was destroyed in the 14th century. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the town experienced a period of economic growth due to the textile industry. Balsthal was granted market town status in 1792.

Balsthal is located in the Jura Mountains and is surrounded by forests, hills and meadows. The town is situated at an altitude of 473 meters above sea level and covers an area of 16.55 square kilometers. The river Balsthaler Aare and the river Dünnern flow through the town.
