Overview

Corcelles is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern, Switzerland. It is located on the southern slope of the Gurten mountain, bordering the city of Bern. The municipality consists of two villages, Corcelles and Bremgarten bei Bern.

History

Corcelles was first mentioned in 1228 as Corceles. The village was originally owned by the Ministerialis of Bern. During the Middle Ages, it came under the jurisdiction of the city of Bern. In 1860, the municipality of Corcelles was created when the villages of Corcelles and Bremgarten bei Bern merged.

Geography

Corcelles has an area of 5.33 square kilometers (2.06 square miles). The municipality is situated on the southern slope of the Gurten mountain, at an elevation of 650 meters (2,130 feet) above sea level. The municipality is divided into two parts, Corcelles and Bremgarten bei Bern. It is bordered by the municipalities of Köniz, Wohlen bei Bern and Bern.

As of 2021, Corcelles has a population of 2,260. The majority of the population (85%) speaks German, with French being the second most common language (9%). The population is relatively young, with the median age being 36.5 years.
