The first mention of Kien dates back to the 12th century. The name of the village has evolved over the centuries, with the earliest known name being "Kihen". In the Middle Ages, Kien was part of the Herrschaft of the Freiherr von Kien, who ruled over the surrounding lands. In 1388, the village was acquired by the city of Bern, which incorporated it into the Bernese bailiwick of Laupen. Since the formation of the canton of Bern in 1803, Kien has been a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland district.
