Overview

Kiesen is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern, Switzerland. The municipality is located in the uppermost part of the Kiesental (Kiesen Valley) and is adjacent to the city of Thun. It is a primarily rural area with a population of approximately 1,800 people.

History

The first written record of Kiesen dates back to the year 1261. However, archaeological finds suggest that the area was inhabited much earlier. The municipality was originally part of the court of Thun, but later became an independent municipality.

Geography

Kiesen has a total area of 4.85 km², with about 57% of the land used for agriculture and 28% covered by forest. The municipality lies at an altitude of 650 meters above sea level and is situated on the right bank of the Kander River.
