Koppigen covers an area of 8.76 square kilometers (3.38 square miles) and is situated at an altitude of 560 meters (1,840 feet) above sea level. It is located in the Emmental region of the canton of Bern and is bordered by the municipalities of Wiler bei Utzenstorf, Fraubrunnen, Schönbühl, Zollikofen and Bätterkinden. The village of Koppigen is located on the left bank of the river Emme, while the village of Halten is situated on a hill to the east.

As of 2021, Koppigen has a population of approximately 3,400 people. The majority of the population speaks German, with Italian and Serbo-Croatian being the second and third most commonly spoken languages. The municipality has a relatively young population, with over 40% of residents under the age of 40.
