Overview
Krauchthal is a municipality in the district of Konolfingen in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. It is located approximately 11 kilometers southeast of the city of Bern, the capital of the canton. The municipality has a population of around 2,300 people and covers an area of 4.28 square kilometers.
History
Krauchthal was first mentioned in historical records in 1228 as "Crouchtal." The village was originally part of the territory of the Zähringer family, a noble family that ruled over large parts of what is now Switzerland during the Middle Ages. In the 14th century, the village passed into the hands of the von Wattenwyl family, who owned it until the 18th century.
Geography
Krauchthal is situated in the Emmental region of Switzerland, on the eastern edge of the Aare valley. The municipality includes the village of Krauchthal itself, as well as the hamlets of Steinbruch and Bodenacker. The Emme river flows through the southern part of the municipality and the Hohgant mountain overlooks the village from the east.
