History

The region was originally inhabited by the Gallo-Romans and later came under the control of the Burgundians and the Franks. The village of Le Brassus was founded in the Middle Ages and for centuries was a small farming community. The watchmaking industry arrived in the 18th century and by the 19th century, Le Brassus had become a major center of watchmaking in Switzerland. Today, the village is still home to many watchmakers and watchmaking workshops.

Le Brassus has an area of 48.13 square kilometers and is situated at an elevation of 1,005 meters above sea level. The municipality includes the villages of Le Brassus, Les Bioux, Le Sentier, Le Solliat and Le Lieu, as well as several hamlets and ski resorts. It is located in the Joux Valley, a region known for its forests, lakes and mountains.

As of December 2020, Le Brassus had a population of 2,363. The population has been steadily increasing since the 1960s, when it was around 1,500. The majority of the population speaks French (88%), with German and Italian being the next most commonly spoken languages.
