History
The name Arni comes from the Old High German "arni" meaning "eagle". The village of Mittel Arni was first mentioned in historical records in 1200 as Arne. The area was originally inhabited by the Helvetii, a Celtic tribe, before being conquered by the Romans. In the Middle Ages, the village was under the rule of the Habsburgs. In 1314, the village came under the control of the Swiss Confederacy.

Mittel Arni has an area of 10.9 square kilometers and is located at an altitude of 1,012 meters above sea level. The municipality is situated in the upper valley of the Sarner Aa river and is surrounded by mountains, including the Stanserhorn to the north and the Pilatus to the south.
