Niederbüren is a municipality in the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland. It is located in the Wahlkreis (constituency) of Wil and it has an area of 9.43 square kilometers. As of December 2020, the municipality had a population of 2,419.

History

The first written record of Niederbüren dates back to 761 AD. The name of the village has evolved over time, from Puren in the 9th century to Büron in the 13th century and finally to Niederbüren in the 16th century. The village was under the control of the Habsburgs from the 14th century until 1798, when it became a part of the newly formed Canton of St. Gallen.

Geography

Niederbüren is situated in the foothills of the Alpstein mountain range, at an altitude of 585 meters above sea level. The municipality is bordered by Gossau, Oberbüren, Zuzwil, Wil and Uzwil. The river Glatt flows through Niederbüren.

Demographics

Niederbüren has a population of 2,419 as of December 2020. The majority of the population (85%) speaks German as their first language, followed by Albanian (3.6%) and Italian (2.5%). The population is predominantly Roman Catholic.

Niederbüren has a temperate climate with mild to warm summers and cold winters. The average temperature in January is -2°C and in July it is 18°C. The annual precipitation is around 1,000 mm, with the wettest months being June and July.
