Ober-Basenheid is a municipality in the Wahlkreis (constituency) of Sarganserland in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland. It is situated in the foothills of the Churfirsten range, on the right bank of the Seez river.

History

Ober-Basenheid was first mentioned in 1241 as Bassenheyd.
The municipality of Ober-Basenheid was created in 1873 when it separated from Basadingen.

Geography

Ober-Basenheid has an area of 3.3 square kilometers (1.3 square miles). Of this area, 57.9% is used for agricultural purposes, while 33.7% is forested. The rest of the land, (8.4%) is settled.
The municipality is located in the Sarganserland Wahlkreis, in the foothills of the Churfirsten range. It is situated on the right bank of the Seez river and the highest point is the 1,009-meter (3,310 ft) Wartauz mountain.

Ober-Basenheid has a population of about 650 people. As of 2020, 90.8% of the population speaks German, 2.2% French and 1.7% Italian.
