Pia is a municipality in the district of Bellinzona, in the southern Swiss canton of Ticino. The municipality is located in the Leventina valley, between the Gotthard Pass and Bellinzona. Pia has a population of around 1,400 and covers an area of 37.8 square kilometers. The official language of the municipality is Italian.

History

The first written mention of Pia dates back to the year 1210. The village was originally part of the municipality of Giornico, but became an independent municipality in 1850. Throughout its history, Pia was an important center for agriculture and livestock farming.
