Overview

Linththal is a municipality in the canton of Glarus in Switzerland. It is situated in the valley of the Linth river, surrounded by the Glarus Alps. The municipality consists of several small villages and hamlets scattered throughout the valley, including Linthal itself, Rüti, Nideren and Engi.

History

The area around Linthal has been inhabited since prehistoric times and traces of Roman settlements have also been found in the area. The modern village of Linthal was established in the 13th century as a center of trade and commerce and it remained an important hub for the transportation of goods and people through the Alps until the 19th century. During this time, several major infrastructure projects were undertaken in the area, including the construction of the Linth Canal and the Gotthard Railway. These projects transformed the region and helped to spur economic development.

Geography

Linththal is located in the valley of the Linth river, which runs from the glaciers of the Glarus Alps down to Lake Zurich. The municipality covers an area of 120.78 square kilometers and it is situated at an altitude of 660 meters above sea level.
