History

The first mention of Saugern dates back to the 12th century. The village was then part of the territory of the Bishopric of Basel. In the 16th century, Saugern became part of the newly created canton of Bern. It was not until 1979 that Saugern became a municipality in its own right, when it separated from the municipality of Vicques.

Saugern is located in the Jura mountains, about 12 kilometers south-east of the city of Delémont. The municipality is situated on the slope of a hill and is surrounded by forests and fields. The highest point of the municipality is the Montagne du Droit, which is 818 meters above sea level.
